4. Modal verbs

The use of the tense:

  1. To talk about ability
    e.g. I can take care of myself.
  2. To talk about possibility and certainty
    e.g. The swimming pool might close due to the bad weather.
  3. To talk about necessity and obligation
    e.g. You mustn’t use mobile phone at school.
  4. To give advice
    e.g. You should have a balanced diet.

The form of modal verb:

  • We keep the base verb after the modal verb:
Subject modal verb base verb
I can read French.
cannot (can’t) see the picture.
You need to tell the truth.
do not need to (don’t need to) wear a helmet.
The children should do their homework.
should not (shouldn’t) run fast.
We have to arrive on time.
do not have to (don’t have to) read the books.

Exercise:
